How Long Is CO₂ Laser Downtime?
One of the first questions patients ask us about CO₂ fractional laser resurfacing is: How long will I look like I had something done?
It's an important question because CO₂ resurfacing is not generally considered a no-downtime facial.
The amount of recovery varies depending on the intensity of your treatment, the area treated, your skin and how you heal. For some fractional treatments, the most noticeable initial recovery occurs during approximately the first 5–7 days, although redness or pinkness may remain longer. More intensive treatments can require additional recovery.
Here's a general idea of what the healing process may look like.
Day 1: Redness, Warmth and Swelling
Immediately following treatment, the skin typically appears red and feels warm.
Some patients describe the sensation as similar to a significant sunburn. Swelling and sensitivity can also occur.
Your skin has just undergone controlled laser resurfacing, so this reaction is expected.
Follow the aftercare instructions provided by your clinician carefully and avoid applying products that have not been recommended for freshly treated skin.
Days 2–3: Swelling and Roughness
During the next few days, redness may continue and the skin can begin to feel dry, tight or rough.
Depending on the treatment intensity, you may notice bronzing or tiny darker areas as the treated skin begins its natural shedding process.
This is generally not the time to exfoliate.
Picking, scrubbing or attempting to accelerate peeling can interfere with healing and increase the risk of irritation or pigmentation changes.
Days 3–5: Flaking and Peeling
As healing progresses, the skin may begin to flake or peel.
This stage can look dramatic compared with how the skin normally appears, but it is part of the resurfacing process.
Continue gentle skincare and allow the skin to shed naturally.
Days 5–7: New Skin Becomes More Visible
For many patients receiving fractional treatment, the most noticeable peeling and roughness begin improving around this stage.
The skin underneath may appear smoother but can still look pink or sensitive.
Being finished with peeling does not necessarily mean the skin has completely recovered.
The skin barrier continues to normalize after the visible peeling subsides.
Week 2 and Beyond: Continued Healing
Residual redness or pinkness may persist beyond the first week, particularly following a more intensive treatment.
At this stage, patients often begin noticing improvements in texture and skin quality.
However, the full benefit of CO₂ resurfacing does not occur in a week.
Collagen remodeling develops gradually, so improvement can continue over the following weeks and months.
When Can I Wear Makeup After CO₂ Laser?
This depends on how your skin is healing and how aggressively it was treated.
Do not rush to cover freshly resurfaced skin with makeup simply because you have an event.
Your provider should tell you when the skin has healed sufficiently to resume makeup and your regular skincare routine.
What Should I Avoid During CO₂ Recovery?
During recovery, your skin needs gentle care.
You may be instructed to temporarily avoid retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs and other potentially irritating active ingredients.
Sun exposure is particularly important to minimize following resurfacing.
Follow the individualized instructions provided after your procedure rather than automatically returning to your usual skincare routine.
Can I Speed Up CO₂ Laser Healing?
The goal shouldn't be to make the skin peel faster.
Good recovery involves protecting the skin barrier, following appropriate aftercare, avoiding picking or aggressive exfoliation and giving the skin time to heal.
Planning Your CO₂ Treatment Around Your Schedule
If you have a wedding, vacation, photoshoot or important event coming up, tell us during your consultation.
We can discuss the expected recovery based on your proposed treatment intensity and help you determine whether the timing makes sense.
Don't schedule CO₂ resurfacing based solely on someone else's recovery photos. Treatment intensity and healing vary between patients.
